Herpes zoster is a viral infection caused by the reactivation of a virus lying dormant in the body. The primary infection occurs often in the childhood when the person contracts chicken pox. Following the resolution of the same, the virus then remains in a sleeping state in the nerves of your body for years to decades.

With increasing age as your immunity or the ability to fight disease diminishes the virus reactivates and causes a characteristic vesicular skin rash. Also in the process it causes damage to a particular nerve in your body that can cause excruciating pain. The pain is often burning or aching in character and associated with allodynia, that is the patient cannot tolerate touch of clothing or even a breeze of air on that part of the body.

This pain may last for months to years severely impacting the persons daily routine. Sometimes patients cannot sleep due to pain.
