Pancreatitis Pain

Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas is a long, flat gland that sits tucked behind the stomach in the upper abdomen. The pancreas produces enzymes that help digestion and hormones that help regulate the way your body processes sugar (glucose). Pancreatitis can occur as acute pancreatitis — meaning it appears suddenly and lasts for days. Chronic pancreatitis occurs when the pancreas becomes damaged by long-standing inflammation. The most common symptom of chronic pancreatitis is long-standing pain in the middle of the abdomen. You may also have episodes when the pancreas suddenly becomes inflamed and your pain suddenly worsens due to acute pancreatitis.
Abdominal pain usually occurs in the upper abdomen, often spreads to the back, may be relieved by sitting up or leaning forward, and may be associated with nausea and vomiting.
The pain is often worse 15 to 30 minutes after a meal. At our clinic we help control pain of pancreatitis with appropriate medications & Nerve injections ( Coeliac Plexus Nerve Block ). The injection is given directly into the nerves that carry pain messages from the pancreas, hence blocking the pain signals & resulting in profound pain relief. The injection is done under image guidance to avoid complications & be effective. This helps improve your quality of life.
