Suprascapular nerve block for Shoulder Pain ( Frozen Shoulder )


This Procedure is an excellent non surgical treatment option for patients with intractable Shoulder pain. Most of these patients suffer severe pain, affecting their quality of life. Usually they receive pain medications off and on and consequently are suffering by serious side effects like acidity, constipation, nausea etc. This procedure can give long lasting improvement in shoulder pain wich allows regular physiotherapy and improvement in shoulder movement.
How Supra-scapular nerve block is performed?


This procedure is performed in a well equipped procedure room with monitoring and resuscitation facilities. Under local anaesthesia and image guidance like X-ray or Ultrasonography for accuracy. Needle is placed surrounding the nerves near the shoulder. Here drugs injected are Local anaesthetics like Bupivacaine or lignocaine and Methyl Prednisolone. Because of that the nerves can no longer send pain messages to brain and so patient no longer feel discomfort .The entire procedure takes about 30 to 50 minutes.
Patient start feeling pain relief very shortly after the procedure and can start active Physiotherapy. After observation period patient is free to go home.
What are the Benefits of Suprascapular nerve block ?
This is a safe, well tolerated procedure. There are very few side effects. After the procedure patient have no pain or greatly reduced pain . For some patients this can completely eliminate the need to take pain medication.
How long the relief last after Suprascapular nerve block ?
Duration varies from patient to patient. In most case it lasts for 3 to 6 months, but that period is sufficient to perform active physiotherapy and get back the shoulder movements.
What are the side effects of Suprascapular nerve block ?
There is a risk of bruising, bleeding or infection, allergic reactions, little pain at injection site . There is a small risk of injury to lungs.

A suprascapular nerve block can be utilized to treat chronic, acute, and perioperative “intractable” shoulder pain. Patients with chronic pain conditions including but not limited to inflammatory arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, adhesive capsulitis, rotator cuff tendonitis, bursitis, degenerative disease, post-surgical and post-stroke chronic shoulder pain and cancer pain.
