This Procedure is a minimally invasive Non surgical treatment option for Patients suffering from – Low back pain radiating to the leg may be along with tingling and numbness due to Slipped Disc ( Sciatica ). This procedure is an extremely targeted therapy performed on the spine where the patient has actual problem.
What isForaminal Epidural Space ?
Our spine has several small pieces of bones ( vertebrae ) sitting on top of each other, and there is a canal inside. This is called the spinal canal. The spinal canal contains the spinal cord along with a potential space surrounding it called the Epidural space.
The spinal canal has several openings on either side that are called as neural foramens. The nerve roots which start from the spinal cord come out of the spinal canal through these neural foramina and are distributed throughout our body as peripheral nerves.
How does TransforaminalLumbar Epiduralgives relief to the Patients?
TransforaminalLumbar Epidural is an image-guided ( CT scan/ Fluoroscopy) interventional pain procedure where anti – inflammatory and local anaesthetic medicines are injected with the help of a needle, inside the epidural space of the neural foramen of the spine, near the nerve root. This procedure is also called as nerve root block .
By accessing the epidural space through the neural foramen, this procedure becomes an extremely targeted therapy, as the medicines are deposited specifically near the inflamed nerve root, where the patient has actual problem, giving good relief to the patient.
How is the procedure performed?

The procedure is usually performed in the hospital, in a well-equipped Operation theatre. Patient has to sleep on his stomach ( prone position ) during the procedure. Patient is monitored throughout the procedure. Local Anaesthesia is given initially in the back at the site of needle entry so that patient does not feel any pain during the procedure. Then the injection needle is guided towards the target under X Ray guidance. After confirming needle position at the targeted area, medicines are injected .After Observation post procedure patient can be discharged.
